How Much Sunscreen Should You Apply Daily?

Using sunscreen is good, but using the right amount is what actually gives you proper protection. Many people apply too little, and then they feel sunscreen “doesn’t work.”

The Easy “Two-Finger Rule”

For face and neck, use the two-finger rule:

  • Apply sunscreen along the length of your index and middle finger

  • That amount is usually enough for face + neck

If You Apply Less, Protection Drops

If you use half the required amount, you do not get full SPF protection. Even SPF 50 will behave like a much lower SPF if applied too thinly.

When Should You Reapply?

Reapply sunscreen:

  • every 2–3 hours if you are outdoors

  • after sweating, swimming, or wiping your face

  • even faster if you are in direct sunlight

Quick Routine Tip

Apply sunscreen 15–20 minutes before going outside. Let it settle, then apply makeup (if you wear it).
